This rare antique Pounce Pot (Sander) is made of brass that now has a lightly polished patina. It was made during the Georgian period and slightly influenced by the neo-classical style. This pot was made in England around 1800. It features intricate engine-turned detailing and was made by an unidentified Brass Foundry. This was a very necessary accoutrement for any desk.
It was filled with a powder made from fish bones, called pounce. It was sprinkled on rough paper so it could be written upon or to dry ink on a document. Fine ground sand was also used. This is an especially handsome example.
